Last week I had the opportunity to demo a high speed camera. Using some swordtails in a 2.5 gallon tank, and tapping on the side to get them to move we got these two images. I’m amazed at the clarity of high speed cameras these days, compared to the old analog one I started using for my dissertation a few years ago. The smaller juvenile fish on the left is probably about 1/2-1 inch long, filmed at 1280 x 1040 resolution, 1000 fps, played back at 30 fps. The one on the right is an adult male Xiphophorus helleri, filmed at 900 x 700 resolution, 500 fps, played back at 25 fps. An LED light was used to illuminate.
